ABSTRACT

Since Ming dynasty the issue about the use of fiction and non-fiction fact in History Plays has been studied by a lot of scholars. Among others, Jiaoxun, one of the top level Confusian scholars as well as a big fan of History Plays in Ching dynasty, built his own distinctive literature viewpoint on the problem of the use of fiction and non-fiction fact by combining his empirical research method, traditional thought of enlightenment in nobleman class, and his experience on Historical Plays in Yangzhou area. According to Jiaoxun, even in History Plays, not only non-fiction fact but also fiction are equally important for the purpose of education and enlightenment for lay people. In addition, he argued that even fiction for the purpose of amusement is important in Historical Plays. In this way, Jiaoxun’s viewpoint was quite different from both ordinary historian scholars and pure artistic writers’ one. Of course his thought that Historical Plays as a tool for enlightenment can hardly be accepted in these days. But his emphasis on a balance between fiction and non-fiction fact is still valid even in contemporary play literature.
