ABSTRACT

Regarding literatures of the Ming Dynasty, commentators in the past often compared the style of The Three Yangs’ Cabinet Officials to the styles of The school of Chaling-Li Dongyang and of The Seven Sages-Li Mengyang. However, it is inappropriate to exclude the style of Li Dongyang from the style of The Cabinet Officials whose connotation was entirely misunderstood this way. The present paper compares and contrasts over eight hundred pieces of collected works and observes the different behaviors of works during this period. This survey suggests that the style of The Cabinet Officials should be addressed as the style of The Scholar Officials instead, which is a special style shaped by the cohesion forces of system of Scholar Officials during Ming Dynasty. Moreover, around the time when Li Mengyang emerged, the works of these two schools appeared to show regular differences in terms of structure and content, and this phenomenon explains the significance of the dispute about style between the reversionaries and the scholar offices.
