ABSTRACT

Chinese writer GeLing Yan is regarded as one the most powerful and influential immigrant writers in Chinese literature. Her fictional creations are at least fruitful in both quantity and quality wise. “The White Snake” is a novella that was published in the fifth “October” in 1998 and a winning award of the seventh literary “October” in 2001. With such background therefore, the “White Snake” attracted a tremendous attention from the scholars, whom became very engrossed with her work. The 1novel handles the Cultural Revolution of China as a background, and takes unique perspectives and questionnaires to portray the delicateness of emotions between a dancer and her devoted audience. In GeLing’s stories, women are endlessly depicted as the ultimate audience. This novel - without an exception – discusses the sex issues that overlap with the unique social context of China. GeLing’s focus on women is consistent and obvious however, greater in scope. Women are not a partial individuals but an actualization of the social context. Therefore, the nature of women changes with how the social values fluctuate over periods. This novel not only shows the emotional cognition of women in everyday life; but demonstrates how women recognize the outer world, specifically China undergoing Cultural Revolution in the 70s. The focus of this article is to interpret the subtle emotions of women under the Cultural Revolution and we anticipate the readers to “understand” the feelings of women under such times of turbulence.
