ABSTRACT

In Bing Xin’s life-long literary creation, the transformation of her writing style in different periods is a research topic which is of great worth but often overlooked. In the era of the Republic of China, her famous “Bing Xin Style” little poems mixed classical Chinese and vernacular Chinese, forming the temperament of Raisin Fine Champagne, which expressed deep meanings in simple language and always left a sincere and tender impression on the readers. Her prose and novel had similar techniques, naturally owning a fresh ancient style. Seeking truth is the criterion of such writing, which was bound to her personal experience. Pure, sad and beautiful writings not only mirrored the writer, but also deeply touched the readers’ mind. After 1951 she came back to mainland China, her writing style was involved in the flood of the times. A series of changes had taken place, regarding to the standards of evaluating poets, linking literature and politics, judging excellent literature, classifying different kinds of poems and judging the best writers. Her writing expanded the forms of literature and arts review comparing with her old works. She learned to humbly accept others’ criticism while actively making self-criticism. In her new works, the length of poetry increased significantly; the theme of anti-imperialism began to appear frequently; the words chosen changed from elegant to vulgar. The former parallel sentences was retained in poems, which furthermore is added folk element within. In poetry translation, she constantly accepted tasks from higher authority. “Little Orange Lamp” on one hand followed the mainstream discourse, on the other hand used individualized feeling and language to decorate details, which were the reasons of its being chosen as her representative work . She gave many essays a bright end and followed fixed procedures to shape advanced figures. She humbly extolled 白雪落地 121 national leaders and adopted a constantly changing attitude to describe foreign countries following political changes. From Bing Xin’s original manuscript we can see her cautious approach in writing, such kind of carefulness actually maintained her long-term writing career. Behind the transformation of her writing style, there is specific historical background. The initial founding of People’s Republic of China inspired Bing Xin to embrace the main stream discourse, but as time went by, to do so became an amulet for one’s survival. Her individuality did not disappear during the process of integrating into main stream discourse, but in some cases became a technique to strengthen the latter. She learned to adapted the external environment and tried her best to keep the bottom color of her writing during ideological remoulding. The essence of the transformation of Bing Xin’s writing style is not “rupture” but “succession”, which is also the destiny under the sky of modern Chinese history.
