ABSTRACT

This study analyzes two novels based on historical reality that were published in the early 1990s by the contemporary Chinese writer Tsu Li. The background of the two works is the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the Second United Front, and the Chinese Civil War, which reveals the true modern history of China that is not represented in official Chinese historical discourse. Tsu Li gives representation of the times to proletariat class who can not experience social enlightment, and depicts changes in their lives, conflicts and confusion, transformations, positive and negative circumstances, indifference and remorse, and predictions for the future. The historical reality of these periods is still selectively regulated in the current politics and society of modern China. Therefore, Tsu Li wanted to recreate the pain of this period through the stories of those who had experienced hardships during the revolution and war, leaving the specific issues of historical reality unchained, while showing the painful scars left by this period to the time.
