ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the structure and educational outcomes of a project-based learning (PjBL) course model designed around the value chain of Chinese new media culture and the digital content industry, based on six iterations of the courses “Chinese New Media Culture 1 & 2” offered between 2023 and 2025. The course integrates lectures with team-based projects, stage-by-stage learning aligned with the value chain, two rounds of instructor–student proposal meetings, semifinal evaluation, and presentation-centered peer interaction. This multi-layered instructional design effectively enhanced students’ abilities in industry analysis, planning and strategy development, collaboration, and platform and technology literacy. Notably, the topics of student projects showed a clear progression over three years—from descriptive industry analysis to strategic proposals and, ultimately, the planning of new services or content. Survey results further confirmed high levels of satisfaction and perceived competency gains, demonstrating that students actively transferred what they learned to their own career development and professional trajectories. This study thus highlights the potential of a digital- and industry-oriented PjBL curriculum as a meaningful pedagogical model within Chinese language and literature programs.
