ABSTRACT

This study aimed to examine learner experiences and their pedagogical significance in a generative AI-based beginner Chinese reading course within a university general education program. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with seven students, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings showed that instructor-reviewed AI example sentences and grammar materials reduced learners' linguistic burden and supported the development of linguistic schemata. Furthermore, learners’ cultural inquiry and presentation activities activated their content schemata, while prompt refinement and peer sharing broadened their strategies for using AI. Encountering AI-generated errors, learners recognized the need for source verification and cross-checking, and perceived instructor support as necessary for evaluating the accuracy of Chinese expressions. These learning experiences reduced the burden of Chinese reading and increased learners’ interest in further study. Overall, the findings suggest that generative AI-supported instruction should seamlessly integrate instructor scaffolding, learner-led inquiry, and information verification.
