AB - The Fangyan (方言), compiled during the Han dynasty, is the oldest surviving record of regional words in Chinese linguistic history. Prior studies have counted its "Chosŏn" and "Northern Yan" vocabulary—both tied to the historical territory of Old Chosŏn—at sixty items (32 and 55, with 27 shared). Through a re-examination of the relevant contexts and glosses (訓義), a comparison of cases of "synonymous words with differing graphic forms" (同訓異表記語), and a review of the collation of the major editions, this study argues that three further items warrant inclusion: 鷇 and 涅 as vocabulary shared by the two regions, and 䴽 as specific to Northern Yan. On the counting unit adopted here, the revised inventory is 34, 58, 29 shared, and 63 in total—an expansion of one of the very few contemporaneous sources for the earliest history of Korean.
