AB - This study examines the expansion of poetic subjects and the construction of meaning in the Yongwu Ci (詠物詞) of Cao Jianbing (曹鑑冰). While traditional Yongwu Ci mainly focused on natural subjects such as flowers, plants, and birds, Cao Jianbing broadened its scope by incorporating small creatures, intangible subjects such as shadows, and even the human body into her poetry. Rather than simply describing their outward appearance, she transforms these subjects into vehicles for expressing sensory experience and emotion. For example, fireflies and crickets evoke emotion through visual and auditory imagery, while shadows blur the boundary between reality and illusion, highlighting the fluid nature of perception. In the Qinyuanchun (沁園春) series, individual parts of the human body—including the hair, mouth, waist, and eyes—are treated as independent aesthetic subjects, extending the scope of Yongwu Ci to the realms of the body and sensory experience. This study argues that Cao Jianbing not only expanded the range of poetic subjects but also developed new ways of expressing the self and understanding the world through the poetic transformation of everyday objects.
