ABSTRACT

This article reviewed the aspects and characteristics of Chinese translation of“Poetry of The Buddhist Saint’s Ten Wishes” from the different perspective fromexisting discussion, while considering the problems of previous studies. The discourse up to now can be summarized as follows. Although “Songs of The Buddhist Saint’s Ten Wishes” follow the construct and contents of “Poetry of The Buddhist Saint’s Ten Wishes” basically, detailed contents and expressions are different. Especially, the former emphasizes ‘Bosal’ unlike Hyangga which praises Buddha only, and explains the relationship of Buddha and Bosal as hierarchical relationship such as ‘Gakje and Euiwang (覺帝․醫王)’ ‘Seong and Hyeon (聖․賢).’ Additionally, through poetic language such as ‘Danchung(丹衷)’ and ‘Jisim(至心),’ the speaker orients to the escape from the bitter humanworld and it also shows at the same time that escaping from the bitter world isvery difficult. Deleting all verses related to ‘works of Buddha’ and paradoxical expressions of discernment and transcendence, it closes the work with the verse suchas “If you memorize it without pause with unchanging mind, you may be able tolearn the mercy of Bohyeon‐bosal.”Consequently, “Songs of The Buddhist Saint’s Ten Wishes” is different from“Poetry of The Buddhist Saint’s Ten Wishes” not only in contents and expressionbut also in thematic consciousness. While “Poetry of The Buddhist Saint’s Ten Wishes” tells audience that everybody can and should be Buddha, “Songs of The Buddhist Saint’s Ten Wishes” emphasizes that everybody goes toward the way ofBosal and continuous efforts and sincerity are needed for this. From the perspective of theme, “Songs of The Buddhist Saint’s Ten Wishes” is a separate work totally different from “Poetry of The Buddhist Saint’s Ten Wishes.”
