AB - There had been reorganizations of Taemyo Akjang respectively in King Yejong, Uijong and Gongmin of Goryeo dynasty. Yejong established the practices specific to Goryeo with 9 Sil and 9 Jang (9 movements for 9 shrine-chambers) while rearranging the Akjang in accordance with an example of 'Jehuguk' and pursued the ongoing persistence of Akjang by selecting the current king as the target of shrine chamber. Uijong replaced 2 shrine chambers of Taemyo, subdivided the ritual procedures and raised the dignity by assigning music to each procedure.
King Gongmin modified the Taemyo Akjang twice. In the 1st modification, 6 chambers were replaced with 6 recent ancestor-Kings except Taejo (the Founder), Hyejong and Hyeonjong while keeping 9 shrine chambers and designated short Akjang only for each chamber. He made the rebuilder the founder in order to control the trans-Yuan power threatening his kingdom. Thus the 1st modification was carried out while even the integrity of power was not secured due to the internal conflicts among power groups on overall crisis.
The 2nd modification was the result of consciousness of the external power of Yuan and Ming and the internally influential courtiers. Shrine chamber of Choheon was rearranged to 7 chambers according to Yuan and assigned Akjang to each procedure. As Yuan changed the original style of Taemyo ritual services, King Gongmin made 7-chambers standard rather than the altered 9-chambers and emphasized the 'father-son' inheritance as the master of ritual services for 7 shrine chambers to strengthen the royal authority and improve the status at the same time. Therefore, the 2nd modification of Akjang by King Gongmin externally improved the status of Goryeo and internally showed the pride of King of Goryeo dynasty and the confidence of direct reign beyond the self-blame and reflection of the 1st modification.
