AB - Ganee Choi Lip was a famous calligrapher and poet between the late 16th century and the early 17th century. He was competent in writing diplomatic documents in the middle Joseon period and was sent to the Ming Dynasty four times as an envoy before and after the Imjinweran. The envoy's mission in the Jeongchuk and Sinsa Years before the Imjinweran focused on Jonggyebyonmu, and the envoy's mission in the Gyesa and Gapo Years was to ask for relief forces from the Ming Dynasty during the Imjinweran.
This study focused on how Chip Lip saw the real situation of the Ming Dynasty at the time he was an envoy.
Confucian ideology and self-awareness are always revealed in his envoy poetry. This was a common phenomenon with all the scholars living in the 16th century, but Choi Lip confirmed his identity as a Confucian scholar. His visits to historic sites showed his attitude. There he was rearmed as a Confucian scholar through showing esteem and respect to people with Confucian legitimacy.
Then, he had low self-esteem in performing his mission as an envoy. When he visited the Ming, he had sense of shame and his pride was low rather than being shocked by the new culture and civilization, this kept flowing in his envoy record of four volumes.
He realized that the Ming were weak when he witnessed them being attacked by barbarians, escaping from the conventional thought that it was a country of an emperor with a splendid civilization which provided aid to Joseon. This led to mistrust of the Ming.
In conclusion, Choi Lip's method of response emphasized the spirit of 'saving up for a rainy day', considering the ruler's role as important. This shows a new recognition of reality and consciousness that a country can be stable when the ruler governs his country with virtue.
