ABSTRACT

This study reviewed the issues with the author and creation time of Cheongryangsanbaekgujigok and discussed its nature based on them. Many anthologies and collections of poems record that it was written by Toigye Lee Hwang, and many have thus accepted it as a fact and made arguments accordingly. It, however, seems to lack discretion. There was no mention of the work until the end of the 17th century as well as the middle 16th century when Toigye was active. Entering the early 18th century, some residents of Yeongnam displayed their interest in the song in an abrupt and intensive manner. It will be thus reasonable to argue that the work was created by someone other than Toigye in the early 18th century or late 17th century. As for its nature, monopoly over nature, wise men avoiding the world, and lone enjoyment have been discussed. A close analysis of the work, however, reveals that it sings about the speaker's wish to keep the true aspects of Mt. Cheongryang, which has an unexplored or fairyland-like landscape not to be found anywhere else in the world, all to himself for many years to come. The speaker is more likely to be a traveler that was on a temporary excursion or exploration and hoped to preserve the intense impression of the mountain a little bit longer rather than a hermit that was completely disconnected from the world and led a reclusive life. In short, the work sings about a sightseer's longing for a fairyland in Mt. Cheongryang between the late 17th century and the early 18th century.
