ABSTRACT

This dissertation is written in order to study the characteristics of Taegobowu’s giving other Seon poetry in three aspects. The first aspect is about the basic ideology of his poetry, the second aspect is about the eulogizing in his poetry, the third aspect is about the teaching in his poetry. Firstly, in the aspect of the basic ideology of his poetry, he has the thought of original Buddha in his giving other poetry in common. His giving other Seon poetry is also based on the thought of original Buddha like his other type of poetry. That’s why this type of his Seon poetry have the characteristics of ideology. Secondly, in the aspect of the eulogizing in his poetry, he expressed the feeling of eulogizing other monks who practicing Seon, becoming his friend and teaching people about Seon in his giving other Seon poetry. Because the other monk’s life is deeply related with the thought of original Buddha in his giving other Seon poetry. That’s why this type of his Seon poetry have the characteristics of eulogizing. Thirdly, in the aspect of the teaching in his poetry. Taegobowu was teaching lay people and monks about Seon in his giving other Seon poetry. He is teaching lay people to meditate in mind without pursuing wealth and honor outside, and he is teaching monk to practice Seon meditation by saving time. That’s why this type of his Seon poetry have the characteristics of teaching. Even though I studied Taegobowu’s giving other Seon poetry in three aspects in this research paper, there could be the other subjects to study. I might continue researching the structure of Seon master Taegobowu's the other Seon poetry next time in the near future.
