AB - The purpose of this paper is to analyze the comment poetry on current topics of railway in Jekuk Sinmun(founded in 1898). The two of them were composed in 1903, and the five were published in 1906. The contents of poetries are as follows. Firstly, the former represented events in Korea railway history which the powers competed over the railway concession of Korea Empire before the Russo-Japanese War. Secondary, the latter were a realistic depiction of events happened after signing the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1904 and 1905. At that time, Japanese Imperialism monopolized the railway concession of Korea Empire. Meanwhile, 1 poetry of them needed the awakening enlightened consciousness to readers. Based on that, this paper has analyzed the significances of Jekuk Sinmun’s railway poetries. These poetries have shown the changing aspects along with the flow of time, are a new writing to regain railway concession and national independence of Korean Empire through the newspaper, and complement Daehan Maeil Sinbo’s railway gasa composed in 1907, 1908, 1909 and 1910 on genre of Railway Literature in Korea. This paper, therefore, has drawn conclusions from the discussion described above. These poetries have shown a few things: Affairs of Korea Empire was changed at the Russo-Japanese War and the powers competed over the railway concession of Korea Empire was a internationally, politically and socially sensitive issue. In addition, the form of poetry was a medium through which to transfer discussion of railway the modern.
