ABSTRACT

This paper examines how the writer Shin Gwang-su(申光洙) of Seokbuk(石北) understood the society and times in which he lived, through his interest in the ‘eccentric’(奇異) and ‘revenge’(復讐) that appear in “Seomagisasa”(書馬騎士事), “Hoseungjeon”(虎僧傳), and “Geomseungjeon”(劍僧傳). It seems that Seokbuk wanted to convey the perception that the talents of extraordinary people are not being properly developed through characters such as Magisa(馬騎士), Choseogaek(草書客), and Dongsaeng(董生) of “Seomagisasa”, Gumseung(劍僧) and a teacher of Gumseung[劍師] of “Gumseungjeon”, Hoseung(虎僧) of “Hoseungjeon”, and that the fact that they are unable to properly display their talents and end up disappearing is ultimately because this society is absurd and unreasonable. Furthermore, it seems that Seokbuk wanted to criticize the social conditions at the time, which were full of distrust and injustice, through characters like Hoseung and Geomseung who uphold their faith and take revenge. Seokbuk thought that he should remember the outstanding people in the world who have not met good times because he has been alienated for a long time even though he had excellent talent. Therefore, Seokbuk seems to have paid attention to those who are ‘eccentric’ and ‘revenge’. This may have led Seokbuk to these ‘strange’ and ‘revenge’ individuals. This concern is not limited to Seokbuk's personal life, but stems from his perception that his time was a society where talent was suppressed and trust was in tatters.
