ABSTRACT

This study aims to identify and introduce previously unexamined classical Chinese poemsby Naun(懶雲) Shin Woosang(申禹相, 1730–1799) and to reconstruct the compilation process of his literary collections. Shin Woosang, the eldest son of Seokbuk(石北) Shin Gwangsu(申光洙, 1712–1775), belonged to a literary family that established a distinctive poetic style in the eighteenth-century Joseon literary world. Accordingly, an examination of his poetry contributes to a fuller understanding of Joseon poetry and its stylistic developments. This article focuses on a manuscript entitled Saegok(塞曲), housed in the Chungnam National University Library. Although previously regarded as a text of unknown authorship, Saegok is shown to contain poems composed by Shin Woosang in the 1780s, along with “Sangbongnokseo”(1784). Through this manuscript, sixty-eight additional poetic titles comprising 121 poems—absent from his collected works Naungo(懶雲稿) and Naunjip(懶雲集)—have been newly identified, recovering most of his poetic output from his most active period. Furthermore, “Sangbongnokseo”demonstrates that Shin Woosang personally compiled selected poetry collections during his lifetime. By examining the bibliographical features of Saegok and reconstructing the compilation process of Shin Woosang’s works, this study seeks to enrich scholarly discussions of eighteenth-century Joseon poetry.
