ABSTRACT

This paper answers why the Benjaminite genealogical tree in 1 Chronicles 9:35-38 is used more than once. The genealogical information in 1 Chronicles 8:28-32 emphasizes that Jerusalem was inhabited by some descendants of Benjaminite tribe. This genealogical information was originally independent from the family trees of Saulide pedigree in 1 Chronicles 8:33-40. The double appearance of similar contents(8:28-32, 9:35-38) has its own motive. The first genealogy of Jeiel in 1 Chronicles 8 indicates that some descendants of Benjaminite tribe were the residents of Jerusalem before the deportation by the Babylonians. With respect to the repeatedly mentioned family tree in 1 Chronicles 9:35-38, the chronicler inserted Ner as a son of Jeiel, the father of Gibeon and then Saul’s genealogy is smoothly connected to the descendants of Jeiel. This genealogical change supports the opinion that some Benjaminites lived in Jerusalem as one of the leading tribes after the return from the exile and that Saul was the legitimate descendent of the Benjaminite residents in Jerusalem whose main laity tribes of the golah community were Judah and Benjamin. In doing so, he provide a fitting introduction to the historical narrative of the kings of all Israel whose capital is Jerusalem. In contrast to the description of 1 Samuel about Saul, the chronicler made Jerusalem as the place of the reign of king Saul.
