ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to explore the theological implications of the Megillot as a collection. The study of the Megillot in Christianity has not been actively researched. Most attention has been paid to individual books. One reason for this is that they are not part of the Christian canonical order. Another reason is that they were confined by the perception that they were meant for Jewish festivals. Thus, information about the theological and literary features of the Megillot as a collection has always been scarce. In recent years, as Christian Scholar have become more active in their study of Judaism, there has been a growing Christian interest in the Megillot. Because Megillot is a section contained in Ketuvim, it is studied within the theology of Ketuvim(what humans say about God). It is characterized as a “horizontal theology” that is concerned with the journey of human experience, experience, and adventure. This characterization of theology is the same as the theoretical backbone of the ‘cognitive poetics approach(philosophy in the flesh)’. ‘Cognitive poetics’ can be used to analyze literary works by using human experience and perceptual abilities as the items of analysis. In this study, we applied the five Megillot(Ruth, Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, Lamentations, Esther) using some of the analytical items of ‘cognitive poetics’. The results suggest that the ‘cognitive poetics approach’ is well suited to reveal the rationale behind the ‘horizontal theology’ of the Megillot. Further research and application is needed in the future.
