ABSTRACT

This study introduces the arguments of scholars supporting the dating of the Exodus to the 15th century BCE and the 13th century BCE, respectively. Contrary to their arguments minimalist scholars argue that the Exodus account deals with the oppression and liberation of the Israelites, who were already residing in the Canaanite region of the 13th-12th centuries BCE under Egyptian rule. It examines how the records of Exodus reflect the socio-political context of the 7th century BCE and the post-exilic priestly period rather than the events of the Exodus itself. When examining the assertions of various scholars, it becomes apparent that their arguments sometimes align with the content of the Bible and sometimes contradict its records. However, what scholars commonly agree upon is the shared memory among the Israelites of oppression by the Egyptian kings and the experience of salvation from that oppression. Additionally, this study suggests that the Israelites supporting the dating of the Exodus to the 15th century BCE associate the time of their escape from Egypt with the reign of Amenhotep II.
