ABSTRACT

This study presents an example of form criticism (Formkritik), focusing on Genesis 28:10–22. It begins by briefly outlining the background of form criticism, followed by an introduction to key concepts necessary for this method, including "form," "genre," "form criticism," "genre criticism," "Sitz im Leben" (life setting), "tradition," "tradition history" (Überlieferungsgeschichte), and "history of traditions" (Traditionsgeschichte). Before providing an example of form criticism, a literary-critical (Literarkritik) analysis of Genesis 28:10–22 was conducted, which divided the text into four literary layers(A: v. 10–12, 17–18, 20–21a, 22a; B: v. 13–16, 19; C: v. 21b; D: v. 22b). Based on these four layers, examples of form criticism and genre criticism were then provided. In the A and B layers, the typical pattern of beginning–development–crisis–climax–resolution was identified through form-critical analysis. However, in the C and D layers, no independent formal structure could be discerned, as they appear to reflect editorial additions or expansions. The genre-critical study revealed that the A layer primarily belongs to the genre of narrative, incorporating the sub-genres of dream report and vow narrative. The B layer was identified as report literature, with a sub-genre of revelation narrative. In contrast, the C and D layers do not appear to represent distinct genres. Although this study has presented an example of form criticism, it also acknowledges the limitations of the method. Since form criticism is neither a unified nor complete approach for Old Testament studies, attention should also be given to complementary methods of interpretation.
