ABSTRACT

Judges chapters 17–18 is propaganda serving as a hidden polemic by Josiah and his supporters to secure the legitimacy of Judah and the temple in Jerusalem. On the surface, Judges 17–18 criticizes Micah from the hill country of Ephraim, the Levite priest, and the tribe of Dan for violating religious norms. However, through a hidden polemic, it raises criticism against the role of the old sanctuaries of the northern kingdom as religious centers. On the surface, chapter 18 criticizes the religious practices of the Danite sanctuary; through a hidden polemic, however, it undermines the religious legitimacy of Bethel, which is mentioned alongside Dan. This was ultimately written with the purpose of securing the legitimacy of Josiah’s reform and undermining the authority of the old sanctuaries of the northern kingdom.
