ABSTRACT

This paper examines the interpretation of the Zerubbabel oracle texts(Hag. 2:20-23; Zech. 4:1-14) through structural analysis and intertextuality. First, this paper analyzes these two texts to identify their structural core. Next, the paper analyzes each text's structural core through intertextuality with its close context to elucidate its theological function. Specifically, the Zerubbabel oracle text(Hag. 2:20-23) is analyzed in relation with the second half of Zechariah(chs 9-14), while the visionary text(Zech. 4:1-14) is examined in connection with the first half of Haggai(Hag. 1:1-2:19). Through this analysis, the Zerubbabel oracle in Haggai functions as a starting point for the prophecies of the second half of Zechariah, which contains the eschatological restoration of the Davidic kingdom by a Messiah who holds the Davidic office beyond Zerubbabel. The vision in Zechariah 4 emphasizes that the entire temple rebuilding process is under the leadership of Zerubbabel, given by God, thereby reinforcing the theological function of the first half of Haggai, which calls for all members to unite to rebuild the temple.
