ABSTRACT

This study reexamines Judges 13:2–21:25 through a syntactic-hierarchical analysis in dialogue with major structural proposals. While many scholars designate 17:1–21:25 as a “double epilogue” or “double conclusion,” and others propose symmetry between the book’s opening and closing sections, such models rely primarily on thematic or literary considerations. By contrast, this article argues that macro-syntactic markers—particularly Wayhi and Wayyiqtol-X constructions—provide a more reliable basis for delimiting discourse units. The clause pattern in 13:2 inaugurates a new macro-unit extending through 21:25, while 17:1, 17:7, and 19:1 function as recursive internal subdivisions rather than independent epilogues. The narrative unfolds as a progressive intensification of corruption: compromised leadership (13–16), private cultic distortion (17:1–6), priestly and tribal deviation (17:7–18:31), and national fragmentation (19–21). This hierarchical reading clarifies compositional coherence and challenges symmetry-based models of Judges’ conclusion.
