ABSTRACT

The earliest national flag in Chinese history is that of Qing empire. However, there have been some widespread incorrect views concerning its origin and final establishment. This essay gives a critical review of the national flag of Qing empire in following respects:1. the conflicts between China and Western countries that were precipitated by way of national flag;2. the issuing of the yellow dragon flag;3. Horatio Nelson Lay’s design of the national flag for Qing empire;4. the first dragon flag that rose in the West;5. the establishment of the final form of the national flag of Qing empire. By such discussion, the author tries to clear up some ambiguities about the issue of the national flag in Qing dynasty.
