AB - This thesis focuses on the variant character forms and original meaning of the oracle bone inscription Zhong(中). With reference to archeological typology theory, radicals and strokes of each character form are decomposed so as to induce the taxonomical units of “type” following the common features of character forms and the meticulous observation of the demonstrated characteristics of each part of the character forms when character form analysis of oracle bone inscriptions is made. According to Wenzifuhaoguan(文字符號觀), we tried to a new explanation about original meaning of the oracle bone inscription Zhong(中). In this study, through the comparison and analysis of the character form, the paper concludes that original meaning of Zhong(中) is flags added to the middle of said the central meaning of deictic symbol of pictographic character.
