ABSTRACT

Lu You departed from his home, Yue-Zhou Shanyin-Xian, on the evening of 18 May 1170 and arrived at his new post, Kui-Zhou, early in the morning on 27 May. He sailed upstream Chang-jiang for 158 days and recorded his journey everyday even though it wasa bumpy road. He put down every events in detail like where he had stopped by, whom he had met there, what he had seen, the history and the character of area where he passed by. And he described a little pieces of daily life and his feelings as well. ≪Rushuji≫ is considered as representative travel notes in Song Dynasty along with ≪Wuchuanlu≫ by Fan chengda. While two different translations of ≪Wuchuanlu≫ have been published till now in Korea, with ≪Rushuji≫ it has not done a complete work. Just some part of it has been translated occasionally so that it’s difficult to see over the whole story. Therefore I tried to make a translation and a annotation of ≪Rushuji≫’s 1st chapter as a steppingstone for study on chinese travel notes. And after this I will translate the rest, from 2nd to 6th chapter in serial.
