AB - The purpose of this article is to reveal the full account of Dongyahwijip’s story modification in order to estimate the position of Dongyahwijip, which is an assortment of reproduced and accumulated Yadam stories in the late Joseon dynasty, in the history of Yadam. Although this topic has been discussed in the academia, the outcome was not satisfactory since there was not enough pieces covered in the previous discussions. In this article, while covering the entire collection of the Yadam in the previous generation, the entire 260 pieces of Dongyahwijip were scrutinized to reveal the full account of how they were ‘embellished’ and ‘reconstructed’. As a result, a wide variety of reproduction and modification were identified, including simple reproduction, anecdotal listing, motif addition, story combination, enlarged supplementary, reduction, and some other types as well. The direction these changes intended was to expand and reorganize the stories while in certain pieces the rationality of the narrative was also improved. Through the transformation, however, the addition of poetry, excessive use of traditional stories, and lengthy and colorful descriptions sometimes led to narrative delay, resulting the original nature of Yadam as short story being halved. Although the rhetorical style used could be considered as an improvement in literary art, the fact that Yadam had reproduced as such literary works proves that it no longer could function as the reflection of reality. Therefore, Dongyahwijip, the assortment of the Yadams in the late Joseon Dynasty, symbolizes the presentness of Yadam that lost its original function in the 19th century.
