ABSTRACT

This study explores methods for constructing BIBFRAME-based data for theses and dissertations held in Korean university libraries. To achieve this goal, through a literature review, an analysis of KORMARC fields using pymarc, and element mapping, a BIBFRAME Application Profile for Korean theses and dissertations was developed, and based on this profile, sample bibliographic data were entered into Marva Quartz to generate BIBFRAME-based data in RDF/XML format, which were then visualized as a diagram. The implications of this study are as follows. First, vocabulary encoding schemes that reflect the Korean cataloging environment (e.g., relators, content types, languages, and Korean university codes) should be developed. Second, BIBFRAME element mapping is needed for elements that reflect the characteristics of KORMARC (holdings information, local call numbers). Third, additional BIBFRAME elements should be developed for matters related to the unique characteristics of theses and dissertations (thesis advisor’s name, department and major). It is expected that this study can serve as a cornerstone for the smooth diffusion of BIBFRAME in Korean university libraries.
