ABSTRACT

This study aligns the Linked Open Data ontology of the National Library of Korea(NLK) with BIBFRAME 2.0 and the IFLA Library Reference Model(LRM) to identify the structural gaps constraining interoperability. All 31 classes and 157 properties were assessed against a scheme grounded in ontology matching theory, comprising three judgment categories—equivalent, partial, and non-alignable—alongside two exclusion categories. Of the 145 properties judged against BIBFRAME 2.0, only 13(9.0%) proved equivalent while 132(91.0%) required partial alignment; none proved inexpressible. Most entail promoting literal values to structured entities, and a subset requires generalizing Korea-specific schemes into generic classes. Alignment failure arises instead at the entity level, in both frameworks: a flat BIBO-based document model and a type hierarchy conflating content and carrier axes prove incompatible with the multi-entity structures both frameworks presuppose, and the Expression and Nomen entities are absent—the latter consequential in a multi-script naming environment. Korea-specific schemes such as the Korean Decimal Classification further lose their scheme identity for want of dedicated vocabulary. The study formalizes these as model gaps, vocabulary gaps, and conceptualization gaps, and proposes a phased alignment strategy.
