ABSTRACT

The National Library of Korea publishes its national bibliography as the National Library of Korea Linked Open Data with the aim of semantic connection, yet the extent to which that structure supports semantic search has not been established. This study analyzed the characteristics of the data structure and examined the level at which semantic search is performed on it. Four requirements for publication and use were derived from the linked data principles, and books classified as modern Korean fiction in the National Library of Korea Linked Open Data datasets, together with the authors and subjects linked to them, were loaded into a triple store and analyzed with SPARQL queries. The findings are as follows. First, although the ontology declared 31 classes, the entities were effectively organized by three: books, authors, and subjects. Second, four types of relations connected the entities, and books and authors were linked by a single property, so roles were not distinguished. Third, values and links were left unfilled: 32.95% of the books carrying an author name string had no link to an author URI, and 18,827 inverse triples were missing. Semantic search remained confined to the relations recorded in the data, and the richness of entities and relations on which it depends was not yet in place. Declaring new classes, subdividing relations by role, and maintaining values and links were proposed as directions for improvement.
