ABSTRACT

This Study examines what relationship Joseon would set up between the Joseon and Jurchen focusing on the status of Jurchen envoy in King Seongjong’s reign where the system of Joseon was completed. In this time, there were 344 Jurchen envoys as King Seongjong succeeded the Jurchen policy of inherited King. This paper studied how Joseon controlled the Jurchen envoy and why Joseon accept it by analysing the status of Jurchen envoy in trend, power and time. As a result, the intention of Joseon is the most important factor for the Jurchen envoy. Joseon would construct the self-centered order through Jurchen envoy while accepting the order of Ming. As accepting Jurchen Envoy, Joseon made the reception rule and time of envoy. These rules and time are very similar to what Ming had. There were most Jurchen envoys in November, December and January to attend Dongii and Zhengcho conratulatory rites. Various policies and rites were completed in Seongjong’s reign. In this time, reformation including envoy frequency, people, and time was finished, too. Therefore, this era has a strong influence on later Kings.
