ABSTRACT

As one of the most representative literary ideas in Chinese literature during the period of the puppet Manchukuo, the emergence of the “local literature” idea was potentially influenced by the trends of local literary thought inside Shanhaiguan Pass. However, and more significantly, was the self-conscious and strategic literature selection made by the proposers represented by Shan Ding. They were driven by a sense of mission and responsibility of two social groups: the new literature writers and the intellectuals, both of whom were confronted with the real predicament that the puppet Manchukuo was under foreign colonial rule. This paper elaborates on the process of formation of the “local literature” idea. Simultaneously, it also demonstrates the cultural identity awakening writers such as Shan Ding, who were in the special period and space of “the puppet Manchukuo”, and reveals writers’ psychological motivations when they embarked on the historical missions through literature.
