ABSTRACT

Nurhachi's power was expanding to the Tumen River basin during Imjin War (1592). More than simply a military action aim at conquest and consolidation, he wanted to expand his influence and subjugate the Jurchens. During this time, in 1607, the Nurhachi army defeated the Bujathai military at Jongseongjin Ogalam (鍾城鎭 烏碣巖) ending with the elimination of boundaries of the Joseon. The Nurhachi, who was beginning to abolish many at the Tumen River basin, hoped for friendly relations, but also wanted to expand his power through the Tokai (東海) Region and dispatched military forces several. Thus, the victory at Ogalam and the eradication of boundary Jurchens at the Tumen River basin became the basis of integration of the East Sea with the opening of Jebu (諸部). Joseon eventually figured out the Manchuria regional situation. At the same time, Joseon had to strategize a diplomatic and military response. In essence, the Joseon had two diplomatic recourses. The indirect way was to suppress a Nurhachi's invasion through the Ming. The other was to send a vice minister and translator to Geonjuwi. In addition, the Joseon had also devised a strategy to defend the castle with firearms and trained cannon soldiers. Joseon also prepared for a full-scale invasion through the defense system re-organization of Pyeongando(平安道), Hamgyeongdo(咸境道) capitol.
