ABSTRACT

This paper studies the relationship between Lee Gi-young’s The Son of the Earth and ‘continent exploitation literature’, focusing on the fact that the novel was a ‘continent literature’ designed by Chosun Ilbo. Chosun Ilbo proceeded with this plan, which originated from internal and external circumstances of the literary world at a time when total mobilization systems of writers started with the ‘corps of the pen’. It was also labelled ‘continent literature’, despite clear awareness that it represented ‘continent exploitation literature’ that eclipsed the typical continental literature of that time. Therefore, Lee Gi-young’s The Son of the Earth was product sandwiched between external pressure as a ‘planned novel’ and the inner desires of the writer. In turn, such internal-external antipodal relationship presented several gaps in the novel’s composition, presenting several limitations on the novel as a whole.
