ABSTRACT

The Imperial Japan has left many field-notes of the colonial borderland Kando(間島) and its Koreans. However, research data have often been used selectively and arbitrarily without the accurate review of the purpose and features of the research. Thus, in this article, I tried to trace the characteristic change of the area researches by reconstructing the genealogy of that reports in the context of the modern Korean history. Japan’s Kando researches can be divided into three phase by each types: 1. the border investigations aimed at expanding the imperial territory, 2. the investigations of ethnic relations aimed at the protection of the empire’s subjects, 3. the economic investigations aimed at expanding the economic sphere of the empire. In particular, the field reports of the Oriental Development Company and the Bank of Joseon, published around 1919, clearly showed that Japan’s interest in Kando has shifted from territorialism to economism.
