ABSTRACT

This paper analyzes the so-called “the Fuji warehouse stock photos” of prewar Asahi Sinbun (1879), which the Osaka headquarters owned. This newspaper played an essential role in molding public opinion related views of Mongolia policies in the 1930s and 40s and to Japan’s continental policies. The photos analyzed in this study could be defined as “Photos on Mongolia”, which were mined from 70,000 Fuji warehouse data referring to information on the back of these photos along with the images presented in the photos themselves. Among the “Photos on Mongolia,” most photos were related to the Battle of Rehe, the Operation Chahar, and the Battles of Khalkhin Gol. In total, these pictures primarily depicted conflicts or events rather than of customs and living accounts. The Asahi Shinbun provided Japanese readers with a visual images that connected “Mongol” to these disputes. Geopolitically, Asahi Shinbun revealed in “Mongol” a geopolitical interpretation whose focal point centered on border disputes with the Soviet Union, the People’s Republic of Mongolia, and the Republic of China.
