AB - Like the rural areas in northern Manchuria, the opening and landing of land in rural areas in southern Manchuria was delayed. Only a few people prospered and the benefits of land ownership relationship were unevenly distributed. The consequent disparity between the rich and the poor in the rural areas of southern Manchuria led to many peasant farmers and agricultural workers residing there. These peasants and agricultural workers not only suffered from issues related to overpopulation, but served as an area with cheap labor. As in the case of the northern rural half, the cheap and rich labor force in the southern Manchurian province also acted as a stimulate of farm management. In addition, anxiety and security concerns related to Japan’s occupation had a negative impact on agricultural distribution and agricultural labor supply. The situation was further exacerbated with Japanese colonial authority’s economic control policies, especially the forced shipment of agricultural products and the control of prices, which made peasant farmer life difficult. Similar to the northern rural area of Manchuria rural area, the ‘pioneering factor’ and ‘colonial factor’ in the southern rural area interacted in ways that reveal regional and social peculiarities.
