AB - Since 1870, Japan has sent intelligence to other countries to produce secret maps, which are called Gaihōzu. In Gaihōzu, the point of view of Japan at the time of looking at the world and the purpose of Japan toward the world was clear. This study sought to clarify this aspect.
Gaihōzu was created using different scales for different regions, suggesting that Gaihōzu is a map made for a specific purpose. In particular, the estuaries of Amnok-River, Yongam-po, Andong, Daedonggu, which were estuaries of the Amnok-River region, were also regions where the complex interests of the powers, including Russia and Japan, intertwined. Gaihōzu scale of 1:50,000 in this region made it an important historical document. According to the map, we can confirm that the river border was understood as the concept of cotton. Also, the Yongam-po area, the Japanese Consulate in Andong, the US Consulate, the Amnok-River Railroad Bridge, and the railroad, which were made up of local repairing and land improvement projects, show the scenery of the Amnok-River estuary. This estuary was attractive to Japan and other countries.
Gaihōzu, which depicts a vast space, illustrates the scenes of the time making it a valuable historical document. Especially for North Korea where Gaihōzu shows us that we cannot grasp the situation of the North Korean region in the situation of division. The various institutions in the United States that hold Gaihōzu expand the scope of Gaihōzu. Although Gaihōzu is insufficient, Gaihōzu which depicts our country spread widely in the United States and Japan. It is essential to know the status of this map and to collect the database.
