ABSTRACT

Wenhewei increased its clout after migratto the midstream regionof the Aprokgang River during the reign of King Seongjong. as a small villagea stable relationship with Joseon and Jianzhou Jurchen servas a bridge between the two forces, gradually As Joseon’s control over the Four Abolished Counties weakened, Wenhewei opportunity to expand its residence to this region. Joseon territory inside the Aprokgang River boundarysend military forces to ward off Wenhewei. Joseon and Wenhewei. By the time of King Myeongjong and King Seonjo, Wenhewei beyond the territory of the Four Abolished Counties, inroads into areas includManpo, Ganggye, as well as Samsu, Gapsan, and Hyesan in Hamgyeongdo Province. urgenJoseon government to change its policy on Wenhewei, collect accurate information about themand manage them accordingly.
