AB - This paper conducts a comparative analysis of Lee Tae-jun’s “Nonggun” a fictionalization of the Wanbaoshan Incident, and its two Japanese translations by Shin Geon and Jeong In-taek. It examines how literary representation of the incident is transformed in the translation process. The analysis reveals that the two translations reconstruct the meaning of the original text through distinct strategies. Shin Geon’s translation actively introduces a nationalist perspective, sharpening the conflict between Korean and Chinese farmers, whereas Jeong In-taek’s translation more faithfully preserves the original style and thematic concerns. This divergence in translation strategies reflects the dual pathways of cultural contact between colonial Korea and imperial Japan—both through central literary networks and through more peripheral channels. By examining the differences in translation processes and textual outcomes, this study argues that translation is not merely a tool for linguistic transfer but a cultural practice that negotiates and reconstitutes meaning within the asymmetrical power relations between empire and colony.
