This article reexamines Caleigh Crow’s There Is Violence and There Is Righteous Violence and There Is Death, or, The Born-Again Crow as a drama of spatial politics rather than a play about the ethics of violence. While previous scholarship has focused on righteous violence, Indigenous identity, or Beth’s transformation, this study asks what spatial order produces such violence. Bringing together Henri Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space, Patrick Wolfe’s account of settler colonialism as “a structure, not an event,” and Glen Sean Coulthard’s grounded normativity, it argues that settler colonial violence operates through the everyday organization of movement, labor, and belonging rather than through exceptional physical acts.
The analysis identifies three spatial logics that organize Beth’s life. The suburban cul-de-sac enacts a logic of enclosure by regulating belonging through property, domesticity, and social conformity, while the big-box supermarket enacts a logic of circulation by reducing Beth to an interchangeable Indigenous laboring body. Rather than opposing one another, enclosure and circulation function together to sustain the settler colonial spatial order. Against these logics, Beth’s transformation into a crow performs a logic of flight, reconfiguring the relationship between movement and place instead of escaping colonial space. Refiguring Coulthard’s grounded normativity as Indigenous spatial sovereignty, the article argues that Beth’s final flight reclaims not territorial ownership but the capacity to reconstitute the relational production of place, demonstrating that settler colonial spatial order is neither natural nor inevitable.
