ABSTRACT

This essay examines The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart (2011) by David Greig. It focuses on how its modern reinterpretation of the gothic elements in Border Ballads engages with the renegotiation of Scottish identity. Situating the drama’s uncanny spirits within the discussion of Scottish Gothic literature, this essay argues that the Devil and the ghost’s persistent interventions in the drama’s academic landscape transform ballads into living reality. If the scholars in the drama previously considered ballads and folktales as old and irrelevant, the supernatural encounters and the drama’s consistent adaptation of ballads challenge their notions by revealing the adjacency of these narratives to them. Ultimately, this paper argues that haunting in The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart forms resistance against the reification of the Scottish ballads to static objects of appreciation or irrelevant past by imposing the lasting continuity of the supernatural.
