ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study is to review studies on listening and speaking for communicative competence in the journal of Modern English Education over the past 10 years. There are 24 (9.96%) articles for listening and speaking of total 241 articles. These articles were classified into 4 categories; research area, subjects, methodologies,and instruments. The results of analysis were as follows: in terms of research area,strategies for listening and speaking were the most examined. As for the subjects,college students including graduates and adults were ranked the highest. In research methodologies, quantitative methods were preferred to any other ones. Finally,instruments for research were varied considerably as in transcripts, interviews, surveys,written test, dictation, listening and speaking test, observations. These results showed the trend of studies on listening and speaking, and also clues on listening and speaking for communicative competence for the future.
