ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to examine the structure of an emerging hyperlink network among websites and the factors affecting this pattern. In order to do this, this paper employs interorganizational communication network theory and multiple methods: network analysis and survey. The interorganizational network is defined by the shared hyperlinks among the organizations' websites. Individual websites form a network with others for the purpose of strengthening their perceived credibility (trustworthiness, expertness, and safety) on the cyberspace. This paper examines the association among hyperlink network structures and the number of visitors and the perceptions of the website's credibility. These relations are examined with a sample composed of the 50 most frequently visited South Korean websites obtained from the Internet Metrix for June, 2001. The results indicate that a site's centrality in the hyperlink network is significantly related to visiting behavior and perceived website credibility.
