ABSTRACT

This article analyses approaches to and explains operational mechanizm of the information society by critically reading two contrasting books. The one is Telecosm by George Gilder, and the other is Key Thinkers for the Information Society edited by Christopher May which re-interpreted the works of eight famous social critics who lived their academic life in pre-information age. Arguments of this article can be summarized into four points. First, in order to understand information society correctly, it is necessary to avoid the technology determinist approach and instead to focus on the relationship between information technology and social relations. Second, we can't find practical solutions for fundamental problems of the information society by analyzing the relation between information society and capitalism at the structural level. Third, recognizing that information technology has both enclosing (authoritarian) and disclosing (democratic) dynamics makes institutional approach to the information society possible. Lastly, the future of the information society will be determined by social capacity to meet properly two conflicting requirements; privatization and socialization of information technology.
