ABSTRACT

Student survey data gathered from 30 high schools in 2003 was used in this study to account for the influence of Internet use on adolescent life satisfaction.Unlike previous studies that focused on the negative influence of informatization, this study seeks a comprehensive understanding of influences on adolescent life satisfaction effected by the use of the Internet. While most previous studies limited the scope of the social environment of the adolescent to their family, this study focuses on how the collective traits of school can affect the influences of Internet use on the adolescent. This analysis of multilevel data using hierarchical linear modeling shows that the adolescent's life satisfaction is lower with overuse of the Internet, and higher with Internet self-efficacy. An increase in time spent on the Internet had negative influences on the life satisfaction of heavy users, and self-efficacy in the use of the Internet generally had positive influences on satisfaction level. The degree of satisfaction varied according to the socio-economic traits of each school. Schools with a higher ratio of white-collar fathers showed more negative influences from time spent using the Internet, and greater positive effects from self-efficacy. The result implies that studies of adolescent use of the Internet should not be limited in scope to the individual and their family, but should be extended to include their school environment. The result also implies that interrelated social organizational factors should be taken into account when establishing an effective informatization policy.
