ABSTRACT

Online shopping market in Korea has changed in a large amount since Interpark and Lotte.com first opened their own Internet shopping malls. There has been a continuous growth curve of total sales, with the number of shopping mall increased double. In the meantime, online shopping has also been turned into a public lifestyle of consumers. At this moment, we need to look back upon signs of its progress and seize the current tendencies of the online shopping market in order to find a new opportunity for the future. This paper evaluates the e-commerce market in Korea and analyzes its unique features, which differentiate Korean ecommerce markets from those abroad. For this purpose, we first compared e-commerce shares in Korean retail markets with those in the US retail market. We found that e-commerce was more activated and successful in Korea than in the US. We also drew unique characteristics of Korean e-commerce markets from two perspectives, market structure/participants and infrastructure. Open market-driven new growth, agile and venturous strategy, and portal’s active movement were identified as unique features in market structure/participants. Unique features in the infrastructure include diversity and trustworthiness of online payment system, quick delivery infrastructure, and establishment of broadband Internet. The outcomes imply that the online shopping market in Korea has passed through its infancy and now attained the acme of prosperity.
