ABSTRACT

This study examines the effects of the Mobile Phone Education (MPE) Program on older adults’ mobile phone usability and quality of family relationships. The sample includes 363 older participants, who are users of 17 senior centers in Seoul. The effects of the MPE program were measured by whether older participants improved mobile phone usability and how their quality of family relationships was changed. The paired sample, t-test showed that older participants used their mobile phones better at the posttest than at the pre-test. Results of hierarchical linear model indicated that older participants who used their mobile phone better at the pre-test, were at younger ages, had higher educational attainment, were not absent at all, and were satisfied with the MPE program, improved their mobile phone usability at the post-test. Also, older participants’higher mobile phone usability was associated with their better quality of family relationships at the post-test. The findings provide support to the argument that the MPE program should be continuously run to reduce the generational mobile phone divide and to improve older adults’quality of family relationships.
