ABSTRACT

Noh, Dae-Kyu. 2004. Semantic Analysis of Saranghata in Korean. Korean Semantics, 13. This study points out the problem of the definition of Saranghada(to love), examines the meanings of the word from the diachronic perspective, and analyzes it from the synchronic point of view. The definition of Saranghada in the Korean dictionary has three problems. First, the cases in which the usage of the word is limited are not clearly indicated. Second, the definition is so inclusive and comprehensive that it lacks simplicity and clarity.According to the documentation from the 15th to 17th centuries, the meaning of Saranghada(랑다), the old form of Saranghada(사랑하다), was used to signify two words, Sa(思, to think) and Ae(愛, to love). This study claims that the fundamental meaning of Saranghada is to ‘think’, and then it extrapolated into the meaning of ‘think hard’ and ‘love’.The fundamental meaning of Saranghada in modern Korean is historically related to ‘think’. The core meaning has gradually expanded and the usage of the word has diversified. Today, the word Saranghada means (1) to think importantly of, (2) to like very much, (3) to respect, (4) to admire, (5) to help much, and (6) to have intercourse.
